5-day Contemplative Retreat at Varanasi

3 to 8 October, 2023

The four-day SIDH Samvaad, focused on reading and discussing Dharampalji’s Bharatiya Chitta Manas Aur Kaal, concluded successfully at the picturesque Krishnamurti Study Centre. This serene venue, set within a 100-year-old, 300-acre wooded campus, also houses the Rajghat Besant School and Vasanta College for Women. Nestled at the confluence of the Varuna and Ganga rivers, the study centre offered a tranquil setting for reflective discussions, with views of the Ganga visible from the first floor where our 30-person group gathered.

Highlights of the Samvaad:

  1. In-Depth Discussions:
    • The workshop featured extensive discussions on various facets of 'Bhartiyata' and Modernity. The dialogue process prompted profound internal reflection among participants. While some engaged actively, others appeared to be in a state of contemplation. A notable observation was made by a colleague from the Krishnamurti Study Centre, who praised the open and inclusive nature of the dialogues. He noted that despite attending numerous workshops on the premises over the years, this experience stood out for its depth and attentiveness.
  2. Cultural Experiences:
    • The location in Varanasi provided opportunities for participants to visit several significant temples and experience the spiritual richness of the city.
    • A memorable boat ride on the Ganga allowed us to pass by and appreciate the famous ghats of Varanasi.

  3. Exceptional Hospitality:
    • The Krishnamurti Study Centre proved to be exemplary hosts. They not only provided comfortable accommodations and delightful meals but also organized a special breakfast outing for the group. We enjoyed the renowned Banarasi kachoris and Jilebi, adding a unique touch to our stay.
  4.  Diverse Participants:
    • The participants came from a wide range of backgrounds, including the founders of two schools, teachers from a rural school, a farmer from central India, and eminent scholars. This diversity enriched the discussions and perspectives shared during the samvaad.
  5. Key Presentations:
    • Dr. Brijendra Pandey, a professor at Lucknow University and founder of the Coomaraswamy Foundation, along with Pawan Gupta of SIDH, were the principal speakers. Dr. Pandey provided insights into various books and articles that could aid in transcending the constraints of modernity and offer pathways for future understanding.

The SIDH Samvaad was a memorable and enriching experience, marked by deep reflections, cultural exploration, and exceptional hospitality. It provided a meaningful platform for dialogue and learning, leaving a lasting impact on all participants.
